I took like 3 weeks off from reading more of this book and I have no idea why. It really is very good so far. I like the main character, she's so compassionate.

Oh, I KNOW I'm nitpicking but I'm preetttyyyy sure that traditional Chinese makeup did not use kohl to rim the eyes. In photos of Qing dynasty women, they're all mostly bare-faced with faint natural brows and bare lids. Maybe a red lip color. If we go pre-Qing, ladies would use RED everywhere: red blush, red around the eyes, red lips, red face paint.
God, why is it always kohl....
