"When one realizes the only remaining hope is to accept hopelessness, it is an act of abandoning one's ultimate dependence on the other. It is a final moment of saying farewell to humanity, so as not to embarrass it, perhaps, and making the dignified choice to face one's enemy, instead of pleading with the equally helpless humanity—being nothing but bystanders, with or without the bystander guilt."

'Many other Uyghurs have expressed to me that it would be better for them to die in the camps than wait for the rescue mission from the world that will likely never come. These drastic responses may seem incomprehensible; however, when we look at the level of frustration and betrayal, we under stand how some may choose death over the false hope they have long har bored, which has led to hopelessness and despair'
