I find it really disturbing how common it has become for ppl to identify as autistic like it’s a quirky trait when really they’re just socially inept and think hiding behind a self diagnosis will save them. Reading what actual autistic people go through is heartbreaking and it’s sad that a lot of their struggles have been erased and moved to the periphery in favour of this new palatable (faux) representation.

Of course the narrative between 70-90s was focused on the parents (boomers and genX) and how their child’s ASD impacts them instead of being a parent (a role you agree to) and doing what is necessary to care for your child, no matter what.

The chapter on gender identity mostly talked about gender roles and sexism. It mentions cis women, nonbinary people, "femme presenting people", and trans men. There was no mention of trans women, and the author clearly was unfamiliar with autistic trans research or terms. He needed a sensitivity reader.
