Contrast between horror of the past and wedding of the present creates a nice foreboding feeling

I think this book is a lot of telling and not showing. From the construct of using Bertha’s diaries to literally tell what happened… to Bertha and John’s relationship (they’re suddenly in love with one another? What? Do they even really know each other? No). I just don’t care for the execution at all.

Them kissing is giving me the ick lol

Sure enough, just like in the book(?), both Bertha and Rochester are monsters

So hard that the inner flesh of my lips was cut against my teeth, drawing a trickle of blood.” Realizing it’s only giving a dulled sense of horror because if you’ve read Jane Eyre, you can vaguely predict what’s going to happen which reduces the fear as you read, it becomes more of a question of HOW rather than IF. Would it were sharper in feeling.

The vibrant fierce aura of Jane Eyre has just been transferred onto Bertha Mason. But likeee what’s the point

Unfortunately I don’t like the writing. I didn’t like Bertha’s old letters to her sister (they sounded like my writing, when I’ve tried to written “historical” in the past). And the rest is meant to feel ambiguous and foreboding but idk it just feels try hard. OG Jane Eyre is so much better.

The thing that resonates most about this book so far is the idea of taking a job you feel good about, only for the hiring manager to pull a bait and switch on you lol
