I disagree that the example scene was very fleshed-out. It still read like a summary more than a scene, and involved the kind of connection that should probably have developed over weeks, not about fifteen minutes. But I get that it’s an example scene and it has to be short, or this book would be unwieldy. The examples being so meh actually makes me feel better about my own writing.

Great advice! However, it appears as though the rest of the book just restates the premise. I'm trying to keep in mind the nuggets of information that come may be extrapolated from the opening chapters and so I'm taking a break. I may come back to revisit soon.
