“Ah! Everybody’s dead wrong!” She gave an angry wave of her hand. “Some of my grandfather’s family died in the Holocaust, you know. So many people had the same attitude then too. Don’t say anything. Don’t get involved. And look what happened.”

“Never you mind what people call you, okay? Be proud of who you are. Because if you’re not proud of yourself, how can you expect others to see you that way?”

Yusuf’s breath eased a little. So, this was what he’d been feeling since Friday. He’d witnessed violence, but he hadn’t been able to name it. He just knew that what had happened had been awful. Painful. Hurtful. “Violence,” he whispered.
