I feel like the author is bending the characters in ways that go against all of their characteristics just to suit her intended messaging. Batman is twisted against everything he stands for, just to stand-in as a representative for men and how horrible they are.

I’m disappointed with how religion is portrayed. While Helena is supposedly a faithful catholic who, despite a harsh life, remains faithful, in this work, religion is seen as childish and immature. Rather than thoughtful critiques, the characters in this book seem to view it stupid. Thats fine, but it feels more like the author speaking through the characters rather than the viewpoint of the characters themselves.

The character development is not great. It hasn’t done a good job of making me care about the characters, or even being able to remember the differences between them. They aren’t complex either, they all fit different stereotypes. Even Huntress has been reduced to a rather uninteresting protagonist. I’m hoping things pick up, but it’s not great so far.
The dialogue also seems forced and over-the-top.

I had high hopes going in. I’ve always loved the Huntress, and a year one of her was enticing.
Helena is the son of a mob boss, so her story is intertwined with the mafia, both in Gotham and in Sicily. This was a perfect opportunity for a Godfather-esque origin story in the DC universe.
Unfortunately, the Mafia elements come off more melodramatic than substantive. I haven’t been impressed so far.
