Climate catastrophe has happened, yet a researcher owns a boat to take out to sea, cars are a thing, postal services function, there are diners (and, presumably, restaurants), hotels are still around, flights are still operational, airports have internet, technology exists to make animatronic birds. What has changed, materially, for human life except that some people get depressed and kill themselves?

Nearing the halfway point, and I'm not loving how the Grief is portrayed and commented upon. The Sea Witch's Grief has been hammered home as insanity, backed in text by incomprehensible scribbling. Now this new character is also insane, but her portrayal is more akin to a strange mix of multiple personality disorder, sociopathy, and dementia.

The first few pages were interesting. The Sea Witch's unique mode of death - and the decision to have the narrator witness is - is interesting, too. Between them the prose - well-written, maybe even beautiful - sometimes floats by listlessly. Kind of like jellyfish.

So far this book is poetic and unsettling. I think Cade is a passionate author who puts feelings into words in a way that really resonates with me.
