Status Updates From Demystifying Disability: Wh...

After reading this part of the book: I didn't realize how ableist I still am, and how inaccessible the world is to people with disabilities. I really hope we can make greater strides in making locations more accessible; and I also hope that we can check ourselves more often when we are perpetuating ableist mindsets (whether that's subconsciously or consciously).

While it is sad and upsetting to read about the struggles that disabled Americans faced throughout history, I'm still very appreciative of all the hard work that so many advocates and activists have done over the years to make progress in this area of the law. We have a long way to go, but it's important to recognize that disabled Americans, and disabled people in general, have come a very long way!

I used to think I was more informed than the general population about disabilities and how to interact with people who have disabilities. I'm only 2 chapters into this book and I'm already learning that I was wrong to make that assumption. There is so much to know and learn about people with disabilities — which is kinda funny to think about since I also consider myself to be a disabled person!
