In some of the earlier versions he threatens the lion with a sword. This may suggest an early version of the myth. One might, of course, argue that Herakles is merely attempting to kill his victim with a sword before realizing strangulation is the only possible method; but, as Gantz points out, the scenes with the sword penetrating the Lion look very convincing.
