The affirmative action bit really was a surprising deviation for the author, especially as he explicitly said it got too much airtime in the discourse of the early 2000s. I was waiting for him to point out that even if all seats at all elite schools were reserved for what he terms “inner-city youths”, it would not be enough to resolve racial disparities, but he went general to narrow very quickly.

I am glad that the author in the forward reverses his stance on affirmative action, not because I necessarily agree but because the conclusion is so out of step with the rich foundation he’s laid so far in the book.

I am not entirely sure what I expected, but I think this guy made it onto my list via an interview I read where he displayed a pretty lucid heterodoxy on race topics, and the opening salvo of arguments that draws a pretty solid line between racial stigma and behaviors that fulfill those racial stigmas was both unexpected and powerful.

Also we should take math back from economists because it makes them write better.
