Matthew has a very naive view of humanity. I cannot believe how fast society degenerates in these books one minute after the lights and/or cars go out. Made even worse with Matthew having this - you get out of life what you give in to it - attitude and his belittling his father all the time.

I am enjoying the differences & similarities between Matthew the son & optimist versus David the father & pessimist. Ruth the grandmother who initially feels a little out of her depth but soon remembers old ways of canning food, and Patton the grandson, younger generation who remembers seeing meet preserving demonstration at school and is eager to give it a go. Then theres Kathleen & Allison!

The different Riley family members all find themselves without electricity, their cars and their phones. David is also without his heart medication. Can Matthew & David make it 80 miles back to Galena to Ruth & Patton? How will Kathleen & Allison get back to Galena?
