The idea of tribal chiefs as leaders is a mostly Western idea(like a monarchy). They're actually more like the generous giver of the tribe who usually performs rituals.
Western society is so used to competition that we see it as a natural human instinct.
However, there are examples like those from the Mbuti tribe of the Congo, who have peaceful relations with other tribes in a non-competitive sense.

Gift economies found in tribal or ancient societies were labeled as bartering before anthropologists discovered otherwise. Bartering is essentially an early form of capitalism. Of which, apparently, it's only been around for like 400ish years.
There are also examples of autonomous gift economies, e.g., the Really Really Free Market.
