Now, this is an oft trotted out cliche that I know for a fact is a lie. Since my family were wiped out, the desolation of early dawn can often be the worst time of day.

I like this very much, but the verb inflection of singulars is confusing. I thought 'my family goes to grandma' is correct. And 'A group of men finds beer tasty' is correct. Did I do it wrong or is this author not a native English speaker? It keeps me from immersive reading.
