Retief's War - The one novel in this collection/omnibus, it felt like an overly long standard Retief adventure. The alien Quoppina were fascinating, though, with all their various tribes (and wheels!). Women continue to be lacking, of course, and the cynicism is off the charts.

Ultimatum - Funny misunderstandings.
The Prince and the Pirate - This one was OK. Never got a sense of why Retief was on their side.
The Castle of Light - The Groaci were really clever with their legal trickery. Funnily enough, Retief actually had nothing to do with their defeat this time.
I wouldn't say these are repetitive, but you can only deal with dumb bosses so often before it gets old.

The Prince and the Pirate - This one was OK. Never got a sense of why Retief was on their side.

Saline Solution - Retief doing what's right. Quite clever.
Native Intelligence - The antagonists were pretty pitiful, but I guess it was smart on his part.
Policy - The bureaucracy here was *frustrating*, but well resolved.
Also, I know these stories were written in the 1960s, but the (lack of) women outside of secretarial or offscreen roles is honestly sad.

Sealed Orders - Retief's a great man of action, and a quick little solution. The aliens were pretty amusing, too.
Palace Revolution - Retief averts a massacre by appealing to baser instincts. Magnan's such a tool.
Cultural Exchange - I think my favorite of the three read here. Definitely silly and *very* bureaucratic indeed.

Diplomat-at-Arms - I really liked this novella, the first Retief story but told toward the end of his career.
Protocol - A short and silly look at upside-down protocol in contact situations.
The Brass God - Amusing, though hard to read due to the Hoogans' dialect.
(I had actually read these 3 stories before in 2013, but never continued with the book until now.)
