The way this professor pronounces the word "allies" is baffling. like. imagine the most incorrect way you can pronounce "allies." it's that. and in a v. long course on the peloponnesian war, he says it a lot 😂

No place else have I been introduced to the broad world of the greeks in such a manner. Truly a large scale war between two major powers, and affiliated states. Is it translatable 1/1 to modernity? Not that I could answer the question, but while I think not, many characteristics like using internal revolts as instruments of foreign interest, economic warfare, and the act of trying to balance or undo peace transfer.

Kenneth Harl has such a huge range I'll tell ya. From steppe nomads to greeks, romans, vikings and barbarians, and he is, to my untrained ears, seemingly an expert on it all.

Best overview of ancient greek politics I have encountered so far. So much more than a regurgitation of thucydides account embellished with occasional archeological findings, such that I feel silly to have thought that 2 years ago when deciding not to continue to listen to it after 30 minutes or so.
