No characters were ever safe. And the ending shows that sometimes there are no winners or losers, only survivors.

I am not a big fan of the several years of fast forwarding ahead. I understand why, and how it fits into the plot, but it's something I dislike a lot. It loses a lot of character development combined with everyone having moved on. Like I'm just left in the dark??
