This is kind of sad low key. Ben is an estranged cowboy because his job, which he was trying to keep on the downlow, got leaked by (I'm guessing) a closeted homosexual. Meanwhile his dad's trying to find reassurance that his son, who ran away from home because of this, is okay, and Joshua (his friend and the POV for the first couple chapters) is missing his friend on a chaotic work day 😔

Saying that Joshua's wanted Ben since Ben was 17 (and he was 23) actually doesn't help the fact it's been left ambiguous for the entire story since the flashback where they were clearly catching feelings for each other when Ben was 15 and Joshua was 21. Would've preferred the lead-in be 17 and 23, because at least the mental maturity distance between 17 and 18 (aka adult) is negligible and it's less weird.

For a "homophobic town" they sure did smooth that over real easy...

I know it's a throwaway line about comeuppance on a homophobe, but police don't steal ("confiscate") people's hard drives as evidence in legal disputes about logos - especially when the person who owns the hard drive is the one suing someone else for alleged logo theft. And the logo is a ranch brand. Also? Throwing the fact someone is clearly closeted in his face is not okay no matter how homophobic he's acting.

Yes. Of course. When your crush is mortified to return home because he's afraid of homophobia and judgment for his sex work, the solution is to stand up in the middle of a town meeting and announce to everyone that your crush is afraid to return home because he's gay and doing sex work. That's how sane people solve these problems.
