Status Updates From Writing the Uncanny: Essays...

A collection of essays about what makes "uncanny" fic uncanny. That is: gothic, horror, paranormal, weird and all their subgenres. Special chapters on Richard Aickman, Shirley Jackson and Sigmund Freud as those who have deepened our understanding of the uncanny.

So far, 2 of the essays have been very helpful.

[Freud said:] The ‘uncanny’, therefore, was not merely something unknown, but something that had been hidden or repressed. He famously called it ‘that class of frightening which leads back to what is known of old and long familiar’ ... In its sense of disquiet and unease, the Uncanny may be the perfect genre for the modern era,"

Claire Dean's essay 'In the Forest, Stories Grow: Writing Uncanny Fiction in Fairy Tales' is my favourite essay so far. And likely one of my favourite essays I've read in a long time, which is super nice to be enjoying non-fiction and academic writing again.

First essay I enjoyed, second bothered me a considerable amount. Hoping the next few bring back the spirit of the first!
