Intellectual arrogance definitely emerging as one of Dostoevsky’s top themes. Though Crime & Punishment is harder to follow as an audio drama given that much of the drama takes place as Rodion’s internal dialogue

Going back to listen to the other works in this dramatized compendium. Do not listen to Ep. 1 of Crime & Punishment in anything other than the sunniest, brightest conditions; it is disturbing. Were Tolkein’s internal dialogues for Gollum inspired by Dostoevsky’s for Rodion? More cause for optimism as other, less nihilistic characters enter in Ep. 2

Wow, love the voice acting. You miss the subplots with the radio edit of this classic but get all the key themes and character depth. Plot was rolling; I was on the edge of my seat for Mitya’s trial. Katya is a psychopath. Easier with actors to make sense of each character’s various names. Thrilling. Loved it. Let’s do more.

After finding out that comic adaptations of Dostoyevsky s works are painful i’m glad that these radio drama adaptions still go hard

Stripped Dostoevsky's novels of its philosophical elements and what remain is a soapy melodrama devoid of any depth and character. The Brothers Karamazov for one would certainly lose its essence if rendered partially or without it even if the adaptation remains faithful to the story. It's because Philosophy is what animates Dostoevsky's novels disregard it and it becomes as lifeless as a catatonic.

It's so disappointing when your favorite books are mutilated to the point that it turns into a total bore. Devils or Demons when I first read it left me breathless. This BBC Radio Drama, however, is as tiresome and as dull as a movie liken to swallowing a huge sleeping pill.

I truly pity those who would discover Dostoevsky thru this medium. They will only get lost in this truncated version filled with, not with awe, but with confabulations. The only redeeming factor for me is Paul Rhys. His voice as Prince Myshkin is a perfect fit. It inspired me to watch the equally truncated Akira Kurosawa's The Idiot, which I've been meaning to watch for quite a long time now.

BBC totally butchered Crime and Punishment. I almost didn't recognize the novel from merely listening to it. Though the voice actors are commendable. The material they're working on lost the spirit of the original novel. I guess it only goes to show how untranslatable Dostoevsky is in another medium. How can one really visualize a steam of consciousness?
