in this one it's the "IM SO UGLY" thing, which is just so incredibly boring to me, especially because it always takes until the VERY LAST CHAPTER for that trope to change (for the main character to find her self value). So it's really either a hit or a miss and for me it's a miss. I'm gonna try the second book, skipping this one for now.

i read the third book of the series as i remembered it from my teenage years, AND IT WAS SO MUCH BETTER THAN ANY OTHER REGENCY ERA BOOK IVE EVER READ. Sooo, i OBVIOUSLY assumed that I would love the 1st and 2nd just as much. Sike. Im adding the same note to both, JUST to say that they're shit. Right from the beginning they immediately have the "damsel in distress" / "im so ugly" vibes and I HATE IT.
