Jesus Christ on a cracker. I must have not been in the mood for exposition dumps or overly flowery descriptions or something, but Flaubert’s writing annoys me. If there is a booger hanging from someone’s nose, I’m sure Flaubert would describe its texture &color in excruciating details. I will soft DNF and return later when I’m not overly annoyed.

Onto Madame Bovary (one of the first books taught to me in my unergrad literary studies degree) and already, I love the prose — the chapter getting into Emma’s mind is so stunning but also so accurate in depicting her psychology, as someone who yearns for beauty but lacks the depth or sincerity to truly appreciate it.
