While I appreciate the intentionality of Chalmers in regards to Christian Charity/Ministry, I believe he has the wrong end-goal in mind, particularly in his belief that government funding of the church was necessary to reach his goal. The goal of Christian Social Ministry is NOT the elimination (fully or even mostly) of issues related to poverty, education, or others. It is a means of gospel evangelism, not ends.

As of ~63% of the way through the book, I dislike Chalmers. A man who, despite his works in charity, seemed constantly lured away for self grandeur. His neglect of parish ministry in his early years and abandonment of churches were especially disheartening. I am eager yet to see how this man matures and what impact he has to earn the title Chief Scottish Man.
