Status Updates From For Whom the Bell Tolls

360 pages of these characters gravely repeating, “It is of no importance.” So when Pablo [SPOILER]s the [SPOILER] and Robert Jordan says, “It is of small importance” it hits like a ton of bricks. It’s like that I Think You Should Leave sketch where the guy burns his mouth on room-temp gazpacho.

So I have to stop reading this book. As I’ve already said, EH’s use of literal translations of Spanish into English for his dialogue drives me mad. That ridiculous stilted English makes the dialogue between and among people fighting for justice and freedom virtually passionless. And there’s more about the book I don’t like. But I’m not DNF’g the thing. At least for now. Who knows if I’ll finish it.

I'm enjoying this so far, but I also don't have the capacity to be researching my books at the moment and I KNOW I am missing so much historical and political context as well as some juicy symbolism I am sure is going straight over my head.
