wait...so is Robert not Black? it referred to his skin earlier as "ebony", but here where they're talking about their sunburns they're saying that their sunburns make them "virtually indistinguishable" from the Black crew. The crew is described as not being dark-skinned, but Robert's skin is described earlier as "ebony" and I'm supposed to equate that skin tone from sunburn? idk maybe I just don't know sunburns

nah is he stupid? they're gonna get Beatrice taken. she's the only woman? what do you think is gonna happen?

irruption: breaking in
eruption: breaking out

Riggs received orders for them to leave bc the expanding sun and rising temperature are releasing innate, millennia-old memories in the mammalian psyche from the time of the reptiles and such. After a few nights of having the dreams, they won't be afraid of this place and likely want to stay (?); that's why the base wants them out.

as much as I'm really enjoying this book so far, I don't understand what the lack of good sleep/increase of nightmares and the not wanting to leave London has to do with Dr. Bodkin's theory of humans regressing along with the environment.

""If we return to the jungle we'll dress for dinner.""
idk why but I love this quote

typo run-on

Typos should be “Riggs”

Also love the full-circle moment of this. Reptiles go, dinosaurs follow, mammals come up, Man comes up with them, Man goes down, reptiles come back up.

“…Kerans could understand the fear they roused, re-kindling archaic memories of the terrifying jungles of the Paleocene, when the reptiles had gone down before the emergent mammals, and sense the implacable hatred one zoological class feels towards another that usurps it.”
This goes hard
