Status Updates From De Spectris, Lemuribus Et M...

been studying German so much that Latin has languished. I'll get back to it, for sure, but German is higher priority (I work for a German company, for the record).

Back at it, very slowly.

Got a decent chunk of this read while on vacation. And by "decent chunk," I mean 9 pages, of which I really understood maybe a third. When I finally get more facile with Latin, I'll go through it again (and probably laugh at my wholly incorrect and inadequate notes). Yes, this is a reading experiment. I'm allowed to fail and try again.

It's only two pages since my last update, but this is actually quick progress for me. Learning Latin takes time, and I knew this was going to be challenge when I started (digging in to a text like this). So, I'm plugging away and learning more as I go. Of course, I'll have to reread the first part of the book after I finish, so I can revisit and see how far I've come with the language.

Ironically, I may be dead before my Latin is good enough to fully understand this. And yet, I persist.

Three pages in a half hour! Man, I'm cruising through this! Good thing I took four months off of studying Latin to refresh my German!

My recent trip to Germany is done. Time to pick up Latin again'!

Slow going. But my vocabulary is growing. Learning as much about English as I am about Latin. So. Many. Cognates!

I'm reading this in the original Latin. And I've only been "studying" Latin - not terribly seriously - for a couple of years now. I'm hoping this dovetails with my more serious study of Latin (using Familia Romana) that I'm doing now. In any case, it's going to take a looooong time before I'm finished with this. I should pick up speed as I learn more. Maybe someday I'll read better than a five-year-old Roman child.
