He returned home with Don Quixote, Les Misérables, and A Tale of Two Cities, although he wasn’t sure why he was compelled to read them. Maybe it was the sense they all contained clues to an eluive secret. Maybe if he read enough novels about the problems of fictional people, he might find some clue about how to solve his own.

Interestingly enough, the age gap between the two characters feels non-existent between the both of them on an emotional level. Tom’s age gives him material experience, but it’s clearly Cassandra who sets the pace. At least at this stage, would be interesting to see a clash.
