We’d assumed the likelier scenario
Nope, just because you hung on to that scenario doesn’t make it likelier. Particularly since some other things happened that fit another scenario better than the one you had decided to stick with.

Oh, no, the second helicopter is a news helicopter.
And here I thought that local news stations in the US are grossely underfunded.

I’m trying to get my head around the Katie story: why was she spooked by the guy in the van, but later worked with him?
I’m hoping for a good explanation in that one.

Too men try to rob the diner at seven in the morning. How much cash do they think there is in the register BEFORE opening hours.
Makes more sense if they’d tried to rob her after closing, s’all I’m saying.

Sadie — as I was now officially calling her
Do you think that’s wise? You think she assumed a false name because she is involved in criminal activities. Do you want to run the risk of accidentally letting it slip that you are on to her?

Why? Did I miss the part where Misty took on a second job as records keeper for the local police department?

one who was prime suspect in the murder investigation.
No, she’s not. She would have been arrested and questioned if she were.
She’s YOUR prime suspect, because your looking for reasons to hate her.

Why is deputy returning Erika’s fender BEFORE the lab results are in? Won’t he need to file the fender as a piece of evidence when it turns out the paint matches?

I’d like to run her finger prints,” Gillespie said, “(…) Can you get me something from this woman’s room? It can’t be anything that belongs to her or I’d need a search warrant.”
Don’t you need a reasonable suspicion or something to run finger prints on a random object through a database? If not for legal reasons, then at least for budgetairy accountability. Things cost money.

Rummaging through a guest’s privaty property would be crossing a line.
Whereas stealing a little glob of sunscreen isn’t?
Or is the line determined by how much sympathy you feel for the guest?

[Erika] was an absolute slob.
The girl just can’t do anything right, can she?
But more to the point: why did Misty not spot her carrying bags of chips to her room?

Deputy wonders why Mariah didn’t come down to the lodge with her husband. Now he’s going to talk to Reyna about her.
Could have saved himself the second hand information if he had bothered to make the half hour drive to Blowing Rock.
What an ass.

Misty tells deputy about a birthday girl from UNC on the lookout.
”That’s good intel,” he said. “Knowing her birthday will narrow things down significantly.”
Hahaha.
UNC Charlotte had about 42 birthday girls that day, but maybe only 10 that turned 21.
But is there enough intel to get a warrant to get contact details from UNC’s admin?

the deputy gives Misty some information she does not need and the proceeds to tell her that information stays between the two of them.
Why tell her?
Police seems to think Misty is a useful resource. On what grounds is unclear. Perhaps because on first meeting she implicated pretty much everyone she knew.

Maybe she was even finally acknowledging to herself that Gerri had not been to blame for the demise of Andrea’s marriage (…) that Andrea’s marriage failed due to her own shortcomings
Judgmental much. You know nothing about this woman appart from one short interaction and what Gerri told you in a few sentences. And you didn’t even know Gerri well enough to know if she was a good judge of character.

Guessing birthdays and wedding dates as the passcode to someone’s phone.
The police officer should know there are only a limited number tries. And that there other ways to obtain phone records than looking at someone recent contacts.

Even the deputy is in on the Erika bashing. Rather than ask her questions about what she saw on the road and in her mirrors as she was the last one in front of Gerri, his first question is to see her bike to clear her as a suspect.
Or it could just be incompetence.

Without proding, Misty immediately tells the police officer about Erika, all but suggesting she had something to do with Gerri’s crash.
I’ve really started to dislike Misty at this point. But luckily, the way cozies work, it’s never the person the sleuth first suspects. So I will be looking forward to Misty having to eat her humble pie (and even having to appologize to Misty.)

Maybe she’d bumped Gerri’s bike (…) yet a critical question remained.
Unlike what Misty thinks, that critical question is: if Erika was riding in front of Gerri, how did she get behind her to bump her bike?

[Erika]’d arrived at the Craggy Gardens overlook minutes after the others — minutes she hadn’t accounted for.
Because no one ASKED her what took her so long.
