Status Updates From She Had Some Horses: Poems

You must have grown out of
a thousand years dreaming
just like I could never imagine you.
You must have
broke open from another sky
to here, because
now I see you as a part of the millions of
other universes that I thought could never occur
in this breathing.
And I know you as myself, traveling
In your eyes alone are many colonies of stars
and other circling planet motion.

I write it to you
at this moment
never being able to get
the essence
the true breath
in words, because we exist
not in words, but in the motion
set off by them, by
the simple flight of crow
and by us
in our loving.

Either a snail's moist web
of moonlight, or someone's
hot breath at 4am
when the night has been
too much, has eaten
you whole.
This is my life.
It has been
sifted through the bones
of my body, through
blood.
It is all that
I have.

I drive this road again
my children older
and this ache
this trembling ache
haunts me endlessly
like you.

what better life is this
than to stand up singing
with no blade edge
against ourselves
other than voices
out of the fire.

I can't do anything
but talk to the wind,
to the moon,
but cry out goddamn goddamn
to stones
and to other deathless voices
that I hope will carry
us all through.

And we go on, keep giving birth and watch
ourselves die, over and over.
and the ground spinning beneath us
goes on talking.

It's quiet now, but underneath the concrete
is the cooking earth,
and above that, air
which is another ocean, where spirits we can't see
are dancing, joking, getting full
on roasted caribou, and the praying
goes on, extends out.
