In kamila Shamsie own words is an engaging read and one is compelled to continue on reading.

No matter if you think you have read about World War II the passages about the horrific privations and destruction of human lives and dignity will teach you something new.
The personal stories around this long hunt for the story of Amrit Kaur narrate much more than a series of deep friendships across the globe. They also share the tragedy of fascism, and how people of all classes were caught in that meat grinder.

A close reading will break your heart. Yes, there are long passages about the maharajas interest and acquisition of French jewelry, and the impact that created the art deco era. Read pages later of the horrific privations that women and children interred inference by the nazi regime. These graphic details of starvation, freezing cold and total lack of sanitation sear the readers mind.

Fascism has a face.

A delightful book so far. It begins with the travels of an italian journalist to Mumbai where she came upon a portrait of Rani Amrit Kaur, daughter of the Punjabi King Of Kapurthala, married to the young king of Mandi.
Translated from italian this is a charming journey, tracing the fortunes and travails of many royal families and princes of India through the literature about them. I’ve just got to Lord Curzon.
