I watched the RSVPs start to come in: first one, then two, then eight by the end of the night. It was so strange and wonderful that this was happening at all.

After the reading, people stood to mingle and share book recommendations. I tiptoed through the crowd, hiding behind a book-shelf to peek at them.

A smile slowly came over me. This was working. I could trust the people in this room, and I could trust this event to give everything I'd been missing here: community. Belonging.

It's hard to sell books in secret.

I took a picture of the shelf and sent it to my family's group chat, adding the message; Rearranging some shelves at the bookstore!

I glanced around the shop, taking in my new work-place. Shelves crammed with books formed narrow aisles. For the next few months, this was my story, too.
