I take back every criticism. This is incredible. Highly, highly recommended.

“To assume plantation owners were ignorant to the greed and moral degeneracy embedded at the foundation of slavery is to give them more credit than they earned or deserved. There was no illusion of humane slavery. Their conscious efforts to obscure enslaved people’s graveyards show they wanted to hide where the bodies were buried.”

Okay, just started, and this is mostly fantastic so far. It takes us on a chronological history of American cemeteries and the funeral industry, starting in Jamestown.

But the author just said something about corpses posing a risk to the living because of bacteria and viruses they may carry (that’s very rarely true. I’m hoping an explanation comes later), so fact checking is likely in order. Still excited!
