The epilogue's refresher of the more recent history and evolution of the Marine Corps was quite good; the other section including how the Corps must adapt to the new technological war-fighting environment was exactly what I'd do expect a Marine General author to include at the very end.

A fun logistical/administrative detail: a lot of Continental Army artillery men ended their enlistments at a critical time after the Battle of Trenton; Marines were able to fill the manpower shortage due to their experience running the big guns while aboard ships of war. Fortuitous!

Oh, I so love these small but significant details...the Hessian commander was warned about Washington crossing the Delaware by a lowly Tory- but the message written by the Tory was only in English, so the German commander put it away in his pocket to translate later! Toll!

"Well, God made these men...though I'm sure the Devil governs them." A "neutral" citizen turning to the Revolutionary cause after watching the British and Hessians raid and loot his community.

When someone is executed by hanging, the subject is HANGED, not "hung." That is, "hanged from the neck until dead." It would be wise to get the tetminology right when writing aboutvan era where that happens often!

The early (Revolutionary) years of the Marines and Navy reminds me of the legendary wild west: unrestricted privateer contracts especially!

Author likes to use "nascent" a lot.

I was vaguely encouraged to read this because I recently watched Young Washington (and saw this sitting on display at the library).
