“Calm yourself, Simon. I can see that rage growing. If Liam thinks being gay makes you weak, he’s never met me, and clearly didn’t pay attention when your uncle and the whole lot of you were taking Rush’s father apart last year. We’re stronger than the ones who want to whip us into their way of life. I think all Liam has done here is unleash Fred, made him finally force his son to slam the door in his face.”

Donny got up and before leaving the room, he placed a hand on my shoulder. “I know it’s not easy to live this life, Rush, but it’s near impossible not to love this family and not be willing to die for them.”

I thought about what Donny said long after he’d left. It was exactly that. I’d jump on a grenade for Simon—hell, any of them at this point—yet I hated this world. It was tricky, and it was my life.

“He needs to live, Snow. He has to because I’m not done loving him.”

He wrapped his arms around me, and I greedily hugged him back. “It wasn’t that long ago that Rush said the same thing to me about you. He’s strong, Eight. He’ll fight because he has something to fight for.”

I wanted to believe Snow’s words more than anything in the world. And for a while I did, until the doctor came into the waiting room.

“Did I hear dogs bar…oh.” Fred stared wide-eyed at Snow’s dogs, who were now lying on the floor after finishing their meals.
"Germadoodles.”
"Whatahoodles?” Fred sniggered.
"Yeah, long story. Something about a German shepherd seducing a poodle and a lady with red hair. I’m fuzzy on the details.”
“I need coffee.”

"Do you think anyone knows what the future will hold when they agree to bind themselves to another? They only hope it will be forever and that the love they feel in that moment will never fade. I know, right now, I love you more than anyone in this entire world. It’ll take more than Liam Brennan to tear us apart.”
