I have to be honest with myself and admit that the only book by Katherine Addison I actually like is The Goblin Emperor. Her murder mysteries are a mess.

It's everything everywhere all at once. One moment, Celehar is dealing with a heavy topic of child porography the next moment he's on a scone recipe hunt. It's such a tonal whiplash that I have a vertigo.

So the perpetrator comes up with an idea to off her employer to keep her position as a secretary of the aforementioned employer. In what universe does it make sense???

I'm desperately trying to fall in love with this new trilogy within the Goblin Emperor universe, but alas, I just feel bored. There's nothing inheritenly wrong with these novels. Maybe the 'cosy' part just doesn't hold an appeal to me.

I like getting more Iäna in this book, he's funny and I enjoy his budding relationship with Thara.

Honestly hadn’t planned on coming back to this series this year, but it’s such an easy read / listen. Even though all the names still sound the same to me, and even though I’m normally not a fan of gaslight-era London (or its fantasy analogue) as a setting, I enjoy spending time in Amalo, solving murders with good old, tortured yet unflappably competent Thara Celehar, Witness for the Dead.
