It's especially jarring to account for Gorby giving the keys to the Soviet state to anyone who will run against the Party, while ignoring the crumbling of Soviet hegemony in Eastern Europe, all in Lenin's name (!) and in the ideal of democracy, while the Americans were flipping every regime they could and fooled the USSR into intervention in Afghanistan and thought it was all an act to let their guard down.
