I’m getting very irked at the authors descriptions of people. Highlighting a battered woman’s missing teeth and saying she has a natural underbite and a lisp isn’t a very kind way to describe someone. I understand journalistic integrity but she also described other people in weird ways so idk.

I appreciate the unbiased approach this book had. I thought that the reporter had a lot of tact in how she approached race (from my white perspective so take it with a grain of salt), but I’m still peeved over her referring to the killers as looking like sisters. I’d be less annoyed if my fiancée hadn’t come home today and said her coworker said the same thing about us 🙃

I really like the book and everything it stands for, but the author mentioning the two moms could pass for sisters was unnecessary and somewhat of a micro aggression tbh. Seemingly everyone makes that comment when it’s two more feminine presenting women. It’s upsetting because these women didn’t look anything alike and the author still decided to refer to them as passing as sisters….

This book is horrifyingly sad. Addiction just wreaks havoc in so many ways.

It’s also so depressing to read about the price of being poor in America. Thank god related foster families started being paid, but this whole book is just a cascading tragedy of systemic failures :(

I can’t wait to be a foster mom because some of the foster families in here are horrible and cruel. It’s so sad :(
