Birds, along with some insects, are the only great migrations remaining in North Texas. Gone are bison herds that once maintained the prairie with voracious appetites, trailed by wolf packs, also extirpated. The rhythms of migration tie us to a larger world, to a sense of time not artificially defined. To participate in migration, even as an observer, reunites us with our human core.

After~2 hours..maybe 2000 inspected & discarded rocks-+four snakes, a pack of wild hogs, and a gang of turkey vultures eating something stinky-I noticed an odd & intricately curved rock..It was a good-sized mosasaur vertebra...the purposeful & exquisitely detailed shape of a well-preserved fossil bone are unmistakeable. I was holding a 75-million-year-old bone of a marine reptile I'd found..just an hour from my house
