I’m going to mark this down on the reread to 4 stars. I’ve grown more mature tastes since the first time I read this. And the stakes are enclosed within safe spaces. It’s a great story. I like it and it was a necessary palette cleanser but with new eyes, I think it’s closer to 4 than 5 stars. Good luck to both MCs! I think the epilogue was cheap. 😬

This is actually a good palette cleanser from An infatuation. It’s a similar story but with people of less volatile temperaments who are more mature and better able to navigate the affair than those in An Infatuation.

Merit comes off very selfish on this book. And that might be because the stakes aren’t as high. The breakdown that is the result of the affair isn’t something we’re exposed to. This is ultimately a story of an affair that is contained. The epilogue is irrelevant because we don’t experience the journey. What we experience is a woman in midlife who gives in to her desires and then goes back to her life.

I wonder why Jane ultimately gave in. Given we’re not in her POV, she doesn’t intimate by her words or actions that she was interested in Merit in that way before. But this might simply be a POV thing.

I’m clearly enamored by stories where people are so driven by lust they lose their fucking minds and blow their lives up. 😭😂😂
What does that say about me?

Lol. The first half of the book is the basis for the mid life crisis. And the second half is the mid life crisis.

I remember why I enjoyed this book. By the second third of the book, the stakes raise and we start considering some of my favorite questions on identity and meaning and love. The first third is shallow and somewhat funny. I couldn’t really connect with it on this read around. But it provides enough basis for the deeper considerations that are incoming. I love me some deep contemplative contemporary story. Lol.

This feels so much less intriguing reading it after infatuation. Lol.

Re-reading this to cleanse my palette after infatuation. Listening on audio. I’ve missed Jane and Merit.
