Less than 15 minutes in and the author sounds insufferable. He quizzes a poor khaki-clad couple about wildflowers, trying to trip them up. Then “the smell of marijuana … emanate from the shelter … occupied by young Europeans in goth attire and more piercings than I could count” made me roll my eyes. Pair that with how the audiobook narrator said “goth attire” made me say “OK BOOMER” out loud.
