Whether one is an aspiring musician, writer, painter, physicist. herbalist, environmental scientist, mathametician, etc. (you choose), this quote aptly applies to one's effort:
"Don't be afraid of it. Learn it. Work hard. Do it seriously and try to get what you can out of it. Keep an open mind, and if in the end you decide to throw it away, you'll be doing it from strength." pg175

This is my first dance with Frank Conroy, and can he cut a rug!
With a writing style similar to Amor Towles, that predates Towles by a couple decades, I had to wonder if Conroy's work influenced Towles writing. A brief internet search has revealed no connection or association between the two authors.

Getting a Long Books Challenge (LBC) jump-start on this Historical Fiction novel about a musical prodigy coming of age in Brooklyn, New York. The story opens as the U.S. is celebrating 'Victory in Europe Day' (VE Day) on 8 May 1945. A celebration that marked the formal acceptance by the Allies in World War II of Germany's unconditional surrender, thereby ending the war in Europe.
