I’m done! It was dragged out because it took me so many days to read, making slow progress. But what a ride! I’m going to miss reading about Jean Laffite and Lorenzo Ferrer and all the connecting dots and their voices full of personality in telling the story. I just wanted more and more to be unearthed. And I wish the missing items would reveal themselves and more info come to light! I’m going to miss this.

So many ways it comes together, so thoroughly researched. So cool to read the stories that further prove it.

Charged ahead after work. Made it to a good stopping point. The research they went through is incredible, so many dots they connected and know so much about that time, their understanding is amazing.

Aug 18 Read a few pages before a busy day. It’s amazing how one little detail allowed them to pick up the thread of the story which had seemed like a dead end. Nice seeing it come together.

I hated to feel like I didn’t want to read nonfiction and to feel stuck reading it now, especially to be making such slow progress and having it dragged out. But this last chapter was so good, absolutely funny the way they ripped that journal apart by pointing out all these things wrong with it! And awesome the discovery they made to his alias, just genius! Looking forward to more.

I don’t understand all of it and don’t follow some of it. Trying to keep up in places. It also goes out of order and keeps alluding to future chapters and info so it’s hard to keep things ordered when it bounces around.

Not a night for reading. This last chapter was amazing in the historical value it had, such fascinating details. Had no idea he was this important historically and factored into even more of history than I’ve heard.

So cool to be reading a book from someone I met about such a famous historical figure. It’s so well written and I’m looking forward to more of the research and having it all come together.
