Devotion (Adapted for Young Adults): An Epic Story of Heroism and Friendship

A miracle did not happen. Although Tom tried his best to rescue him, even risking his own life, Jesse, sadly, died in that plane crash. Daisy's reaction to his death is heartbreaking. The fact that Tom was forced to leave Jesse, who was still alive, was even more sad. However, although Jesse had died, his legacy will never be forgotten. The "lost legion" successfully retreated, and their contributions will live on.

I find a part very interesting. When Red's legion is surrounded by enemies and feeling hopeless, the air support, regardless of the weather, helps the marines to survive like saviors. Also, I am shocked by how deadly a war can be. When Tom's group dropped a bomb on the enemy, they suffered a painful death. Jesse was also in a struggling situation, and I am looking forward to seeing what will happen. Will he survive?

I am sad for Red. Another character had died. While I feel sad for this loss, I am shocked that Devans died so easily. In a war, people die without a warning, and it just happens so casually. People had to kill each other for all kinds of different reasons. Red, later in a fight, cruelly killed an enemy officer. The enemy officer might also have a family and comrades who admire him. This is just how a war is.

I just finished reading Devotion. The sad ending made me feel bad. Although Tom tries so hard to save Jesse, it is too risky to get a pilot out of a flaming plane in enemy territory. Their bond was incredibly moving, and Tom’s determination showed the depth of their friendship. I kept hoping for a miracle, but the reality of war hit hard. This book made me reflect on the sacrifices made in war.

I found an interesting sentence on page 201. One cook said to Jesse," Now, when people see a black person in the hallway, he won't know he is a cook or a pilot." That shows what black people's social status is. In a warship, when people see a black person, they will likely think he is a cook but not a soldier. I can see that how much effort and how much pressure he needs to suffer.

On page 147, I find a sentence in war did saving one life often means taking another. War is a very brutal thing. This book tells us that it forces us confront the cost of war, the weight of choices, and what it means to hold onto loyalty during bad times. Perhaps the truth of devotion isn’t just in who we’re willing to die for, but what we’re forced to live with.In the book no one want to fight, but they want to live

I was impressed by the generosity of black steward toward Jesse. They gifted a Rolex, one of the most expensive watch brand, to celebrate Jesse's birthday. It is heartwarming to see that even in such a dangerous place, there is still love. After this, however, as China joined war, Jesse and Tom were again fighting. Although I know this is just a book, I still feel very weird reading my country being the "villian."

As the book is entering the Korean War, I find it more interesting to read. The growth of several characters standed out to me. Red, as a rookie, destroyed a tank and saved his friend. Marty in the Leyte even successfully hitted a bridge. I am concerned about Tom, however, as he felt very guilty killing people. As the book proceed, China will soon join the war, and I am excited to see how the plot will become then.

After reading this book, I want to talk about it using my perspective as a Chinese student. Growing up in China, we learned about the Korean War (fighting against the United States to aid North Korea) as a history of heroes defending their country. But the book got me thinking, did those soldiers really know what they were fighting for? Is their loyalty to their country, to their comrades, or just to survive?

Tom had some love interest with a woman in Lebanon. I find it funny that when he woke up the next day, he immediately regretted the stupid things he had done last night just to flirt with that girl. The Leyte also sailed to Korea, meaning the two main characters would be fighting directly. I was a little emotional, seeing them spending their last few days with their family before deployment to such a dangerous place.

In this part, the Korean War broke out, and I noticed a few paragraphs describing it. I found Jesse's perspective interesting. Jesse was worried about the possibility of another world war breaking out and sacrificing. Unlike Tom, Jesse had a family, making him way more concerned about the possible dangers. I also find it funny when Marty was assigned to work extensively and was unable to meet his French girlfriend.

After reading this book, I have always been thinking about what is the theme of the book is. The name of the book is Devotion. We can find other themes, such as friendship, racism, and war. However, I think that the book is written around the theme of devotion, wath will happened next are there gonna be a time the the boo shows Loyalty vs. Betrayal. I am so curious about what will happen next.

Tom’s unwavering loyalty in an era of prejudice moved me. Although military segregation, he stood by his Black comrades, sharing food, defying bigots, even with the risk of getting kicked out. Their bond, in trenches, proved that courage isn’t just bullets, but breaking barriers. This let me think of the last book that we read, the brotherhood between Gene and Finny does not go well, they do not believe each other.

In the next few chapters, there were more background stories about the two contrasting protagonists. I really admire Jesse, who was from a poor sharecropper family and worked very diligently to be a pilot. I still remember that when he told others that he would be a pilot, he was laughed at. As time goes by, the Korean War will soon break out, and I am looking forward to seeing these two participating in it.

Chapter 8, where Jesse, against all odds, earns his wings as a pilot in an era when racism against Black people was such a big thing. This story isn’t just about the individual, it’s about the quiet the mentor who risked his reputation, and the family who prayed for his safety. Their help helped Jesse overcome a lot of problems. Of course, Jesse's quality to fight for his dream is very brave and admirable.

I first noticed Tom's special perspective on the Chinese army. The education I had in China is that these soldiers are heroes, helping North Korea and defending the U.S. invasion. From Tom's perspective, however, they are terrifying enemies who killed their "boys." I also noticed the difference between the two families. One is wealthy, while the other had a struggling past. How did Jesse end up as an admirable pilot?

After reading chapters 2 and 3, I found the difference between Tom and Jesse. Tom can go to school and have a lovely home. But Jesse needs to work, and he doesn't even have shoes. Tom was told by his dad to assume the best for people; on the other hand, Jesse's dad just wants Jesse and he's brother to get the hell out of Mississippi. I am curious about how Jesse became a pilot and built a deep relationship with Tom.

On page 6, author said that " In 1950 their friendship was genuine, but ahead of the times." In that time, the relationship between black people and white people was not recognized. Tom and Jesse's bond in 1950 was courageous, defying racial norms. Their genuine friendship challenged societal barriers, paving the way for change. A bold step toward equality when such unity was rare, especially they are both soldiers.
