Chapter 25 is a bit beyond my ken but when Phyllis describes the forsythia tunnel and her college and then the Memphis bathrooms as experiences of joy, it reminded me forcibly of C.S. Lewis’s experiences of joy and that they were, like Phyllis’s, a sudden vision into another world. They are a pulling back the curtain. I’ve had these too.

Phyllis’s father’s reaction to her proposed marriage to Sam is so very reminiscent of Harriet Vane in Gaudy Night.
