It's very complicated. Simply put, we must first expose the fact that the foreigners, our own government, the warlords, the bureaucrats, and the capitalists are all links in the same chain. We must do this to awaken the people. Once the people are awakened, they can become a powerful force.

The May Fourth movement offered us two imperatives: to discard all the old dogmas and to rely on our own convictions to create a totally new system of values. But with our empty minds, what could we create? So all we did was follow the impulses of the moment.

The people of lofty ideals who sounded the battle cry to awaken youth did not prepare a bright and happy world to receive these refugees.

Mei had no clear idea of what it was that she actually wanted. Like a peevish child awakened too early from her nap, she was dissatisfied with everything; the whole world provoked her enmity.

"A momentary fit of passion overcame my will!" ...Mei felt that the people of the world could be divided into two types: once was animal in nature, fierce, and cruel; the other was human in nature but was weak.

She understood what Mrs. Huang meant when she said that things "turned," but Mei could not agree with such an objective philosophy of change. She believed implicitly in the individual's subjective power to transform the environment.

I want with all my heart to do something of benefit to others, but the result is always the opposite. Do you mean to say I'm some kind of monster who can only hurt people?
