“All the liberal tricks are seen through and known now by heart. So, for better or for worse, parliamentary rule is finished.”
There’s plenty of “unsavory” content in Lewis’s nonfiction from this era, but, IMO, he had one of the sharpest minds of the era and it’s worth working through his critique of liberal democracy

So far Lewis has taken gutteral thrusts at the "common man" while emphasising the importance of a ruler along with the desire to be ruled by the former. He has bruised up well that democratic whore and her fancy towards the liberty of having all but using none. (Such as with free movement of peoples) Freedom demands suffering and overcoming, the American version is but a shortcut substituted by outward dependence.
