Only to say ‘Ahead of me stretched a shining road stacked with the pelts of demons’ on the next page?

Ehhhh, this writing style and character voice isn’t really working for me. Is the fact that people are afraid to be out trading and travelling after a manticore kills a bunch of people in a town a ‘strange thing’? Especially when the character/author is comparing this reaction to death to women dying in childbirth, or men dying on battlefields? Huh?

Falconry fantasy with a manticore? So refreshing to read eastern fantasy with a unique culture and story thus far.
