Butt chair. Alternatively, dog chair with butt holes. Piranesi is the giver who will not stop giving. (I showed this to a coworker. She said, "This was done in MARBLE." I said, "The original artisan took pains to ensure the butts faced forward.") (OTOH, maybe the buttholes were originally sockets for some kind of tail decoration hanging down in front? But it is still a butt chair.)

When Scarecrows Attack.

Absolutely terrifying figures of human beings, they look like The Walking Dead. overly long arms, like as long or longer than their legs, and weirdly contorted bodies. Either Piranesi was going for something atmospheric or he was really just bad at drawing people.

I forgot what slow going looking through all these plates actually is. 0_0 But so fascinating!

LOOK WHAT HE DID. Using a piece of fallen masonry to cast a corner of shadow over the caption he has written below the picture. The guy is amazing. As a sidenote, I wish Taschen had included translations of the actual captions. I notice this would have made an already expensive book even more expensive, but it’s kind of a shame.

This book is CHONK. I checked it because we were reading Clarke's "Piranesi" for January book club and I wanted to look cool, but never really cracked the cover. It's about a week overdue and since I had some time last night, I thought I'd skim it some and return it, but skimming turned into an outright read. Not that much text, presented in English, German and French. Images worth poring over.
