Status Updates From Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of ...

We knew the Moon from our earliest days. It was there when our ancestors descended from the trees into the savannahs, when we learned to walk upright, when we first devised stone tools, when we domesticated fire, when we invented agriculture and built cities and set out to subdue the Earth.

[And the whole time, the Moon was like......oy, these nudniks]

Before we devised artificial light&atmospheric pollution&modern forms of nocturnal entertainment, we watched the stars. There were practical calendrical reasons of course, but there was more to it than that. Even today, the most jaded city dweller can be unexpectedly moved upon encountering a clear night sky studded w/1000s of twinkling stars. When it happens to me, after all these years it still takes my breath away

And after the Earth dies, some 5 billion years from now, after it is burned to a crisp or even swallowed by the Sun, there will be other worlds and stars and galaxies coming into being--and they will know nothing of a place once called Earth.
