“Since the winter of 2015 … I have taken three journeys through Donbas. There I witnessed the population’s fear of war and possible death gradually transform into apathy. I saw war becoming the norm, saw people trying to ignore it, learning to live with it … I decided to write a novel about ordinary people whom the war had failed to force from their homes.”
